According to a very ancient legend whose sources remain fragile due to the effects of time, the hibiscus tea also know as karkade in Egypt was the favorite drink of the pharaohs. They used it to relax after very hot days and also to find energy. This tea was perfectly refreshing after a day in the hot desert heat and has been used in ceremonies and celebrations for centuries. Today, hibiscus tea is consumed all over the world and has a variety of health benefits associated with it.
The hibiscus tea also known as Bissap (hibiscus sabdariffa) is prepared from a plant native to Guinea, West Africa. We can also find the plant in some tropical parts across the world. It is an herbaceous plant of the family Malvaceae, such as okra or cotton, which grows exclusively in the tropics.
Decorated with chalices and green leaves or bright red, it measures between 1.50 meters and 2 meters high. Red bissap calyxes are used to prepare sweet juices, jams, and dyes, while green calyxes are used to prepare sauces and condiments. But that's something you know already... right!
